Now click this link to visit the same Microsoft business productivity garbage, except this time, it's for the business users in Poland -

WAT?

That womans monitor is NOT plugged in.....

Hopefully they soon realise how dumb they were and remove that terrible Photoshop attempt. Luckily I am smarter than Microsoft and planned ahead for them removing this:

Benching Is Life

I spent 7 hours overclocking and benching my system the other night and managed to get some (what I think) are pretty awesome scores and results.

I managed to push my i7 to 4.1Mhz which is great on air cooling, although temps did get scary high, I managed to complete my runs.

The X2 I managed to clock to the limit. After hours of trying and trying, I settled on 813/971 and quickly realised that on stock cooling, this card will not go any higher than this. But it was stable enough to get through all of my runs, so I'm happy with that for now.

So here we go, click the scores for links to the verification pages:

Sure Microsoft, You're The Best

So, I'm doing what I do every day. Browsing forums, reading up on news, checking emails. Just the usual innocent stuff I do when I have spare time at work. I didn't ask nor deserve to be violated, or offended. But Microsoft did just that, by creating and displaying this monstrosity on their website -

I mean, yes Microsoft, we know you think you're the best and we know you make ridiculous claims all of the time, but this, THIS Microsoft, is embarassing.

First thing is first. I'm not completely sure when you posted this little table of lies, but I know it was very recently, and the first thing I notice is that you didn't include Safari 4 in your "comparisons".... We'll leave it at that for now, but if you're reading this and you work for Microsoft, please feel free to leave reasons and/or bad excuses as to why this is. Nevermind, I didn't think you would anyway.

It's not even like you have worded or made the categories in this table benefit your browsers functionality to make it seem like it comes out on top. At least I would even acknowledge the effort you could have put into it by doing this, but by saying what you have here, it just makes you look, well, immature, if that could even make any sense? The fact that you are claiming the customization of IE8 is on par with Firefox 3 backs up my point.

We have this, we have that, and this is why ours is the best. Well what about Firefox and Chrome's features that you fail to even consider in this?

Your browser isn't bad, IE7 was an example (the definition?) of bad! So you have made great improvements since that disaster at least. But, in my personal opinion, you still have alot to prove and IMprove with IE before you can even think about competing with these other browsers.

Speed wise, you know the new Safari browser is laughing at you and your competitors, so lets just not go down the benchmarking route and laugh at you any more than we need to.

To finish things off, please continue the great work with Win 7, I look forward to installing my Euro version without your bundled super browser.

GG.

p.s. I just watched this video and I think it gives a good example of the type of people who use Internet Explorer. Enough said.

Folding @ Home

I recently started folding after doing some reading about it on OCN. I'm not pushing out major PPD like some guys on the Overclock.net team, but every work unit counts.

I'm only folding with my old HD3850 running 24/7 at the minute. As I upgrade and eventually move into my own place, I expect to have a proper folding rig setup so I can push out more PPD and help the cause. But for now, I'm doing what I can.

My personal stats are here - xdcx EOC Folding Stats
Overclock.net Team stats are here - Team 37726 EOC Folding Stats

If you would like to find out more about folding or get involved yourself then a very useful thread can be found here on OCN. All the information you need to get started with Folding @ Home is included in the thread, and if you have any questions, don't be shy to ask the OCN people.

Out With The Old - In With The New

I took photo's of the GPU and PSU upgrade process. I just thought it would be nice to have some kind of photo log of how my computer has come along or improved over time. (Images are small for the sake of keeping the post shorter, click them to elarge them to full size):

This is Buddy, my helper and best friend. He has the, "this dude has no idea what he is doing" look going on. No faith. He bailled after 5 minutes to go wrestle with a rubber toy, I guess that was more interesting for him? Loser...
Here's a size comparison between the Hyper 530W Type M and the Corsair HX 1000W
And a size comparison between the HD4870 and the HD4870 X2
Out with the old and in with the new
Messy cables at the back, but some cable ties later and it's not so bad
Everything in place and looking awesome
Then I wanted to play with Crossfire and combine my 2 cards, it didn't work out as great as I thought it would, but it looked nice
I ran a few benchmarks with CF enabled, and ran the same benchmarks using the new X2 card on it's own, just out of curiosity to see any performance increase and also so I could learn how to setup and run Crossfire. The benchmarks/results etc can all be found HERE in the thread I created on Overclockers.net.

Before & After

I thought I would conduct a little "Before and After" test just to see the level of performance upgrade I am going to be looking at from the 512mb HD4870 to HD4870X2 jump. I used Crysis Warhead with the following settings on the HiS HD4870 512mb:

GPU - HiS HD4870 512MB
Screen Res - 1680x1050
Anti Aliasing - x2
Vsync - Off
Advanced Settings - All set to "Gamer"

With these settings, the card produces an average of 22-30fps which is definitely smooth enough and playable. With large explosions and alot of gun fire, it can struggle a bit.

GPU - XFX HD4870 X2
Screen Res - 1680x1050
Anti Aliasing - x2
Vsync - Off
Advanced Settings - All set to "Gamer"
as above^^
Using the same settings on the X2, I was getting average frame rates of between 42-60fps.

GPU - XFX HD4870 X2
Screen Res - 1680x1050
Anti Aliasing - x8
Vsync - On
Advanced Settings - All set to "Enthusiast"

Crysis Warhead maxed out on the X2. With these settings I was getting frame rates as high as 44fps, but they were also dropping as low as 18fps like in the bottom screenshot. The game is unplayable when it gets down as low as this, but by leaving all settings on "Enthusiast" and dropping the AA down to x4, the game is definitely playable and will only struggle in really intense situations.

I am more than happy with the performance increase from the 4870 to the X2. This card is going to max out every other game I play with absolute ease! The next step will be overclocking the card and seeing if I can make the max settings playable.....

Upgrades, Upgrades, Upgrades!

The time has come. I mean, I haven't upgraded anything in like, 2 months now.....

To-Do List:

Make some money! -
  • List my PSP on eBay - DONE!
  • Sell the PSP - DONE!
  • Sell my 4870 to Sherv from work
  • Get paid - DONE!
  • Sell my laptop if required (I hope not)
Possible upgrade buys (in order) -
This is all going to have to be gradual, as unfortunately, I am not made of money. You might think it's crazy going PSU and GPU first, but I might be selling the 4870 as early as next week. So depending on this and the PSP selling, late next week could see the Corsair and the GPU I decide on, in my system. This plan could change alot. Keep checking back for progress and updates.

Update 04/06/09 - So, I managed to last only a few hours between the time of creating this blog post and actually placing orders for the new PSU and GPU today. I decided on the 4870X2 because the price on OcUK was really cheap for the XFX, and also after looking at benchmarks and other comparisons, I think the 4870X2 gives the best "bang for buck" over the GTX285. My last 2 cards have been ATi which also helped the decision and the only real reason I was looking at nVidia cards was because they produce much more PPD for folding, so the ATi is all round the best option for me. Only downside is that I will be paying my car insurance up monthly this year, rather than paying it all off in one go. Priorities, priorities.....

Update 05/06/09 - The Corsair PSU and XFX X2 arrived in the post today. Both are installed and working great, see above for benchmarks between my previous and new card in Crysis Warhead. The PSP I had for sale on eBay was also bought by someone today, so that gives me some money back to add to the i7 + motherboard fund.

Update 26/06/09 - I moved the To-Do List and my possible upgrade buys to a handy little section up the top left of the blog. So I'll continue editing it on there with my plans/changes to plans instead of editing a post so far down the blog. Sweet!

My System

So here it is. The first thing I am planning to talk about is my gaming system.

Cable Management about as good as I could possibly get it without adding extensions to the current cables. This will be improved soon with an upgrade that I'll be posting about later -

The new Antec 902 case. I love it. Great build quality, great to work with. I am yet to find a single thing I do not like about this case -

I've added a 120mm Yate Loon to the side window to pull in some more air -

This is basically a new build. None of the components are any more than 4 months old. Here are the current specs -

OS - Windows Vista Ultimate 32 Bit ***
Case - Antec 902
CPU - Intel Q6600 G0 Stepping Quad Core @ 3.1 GHz
HSF - Zalman CNPS9700
Motherboard - Asus P5KC Ai Lifestyle
GPU - HiS HD4870 512mb ***
Memory - OCZ Reaper DDR3 1800Mhz (2x2GB)
HDD - Seagate ST3500320AS 500GB
PSU - Hiper Type M 530W ***
Sound - SoundBlaster Xfi Extreme Music
Mouse - Razer Copperhead
Keyboard - Saitek Eclipse 3
Display - LG Flatron W2252TQ 22"

Anything marked with *** is soon to be replaced. I am going to be making more posts in the near future regarding these upgrades.

Currently, the only overclocking I have done on the system is raising the processor from its stock 2.4GHz, up to 3.1GHz. The Zalman HSF was a new addition very recently, so I am planning to push this chip further than the 3.1 mark. The good thing is, I am very new to overclocking, so documenting my progression and learning here will work out really well.

So, What's This All About?

I am going to use this blog to document and share progression I am making with anything and everything to do with my hobby in computing.

Expect things such as, step by step updates of things I am currently working on. This could be anything. Overclocking, hardware upgrades, Linux adventures, maybe even case mods eventually, who knows? Time will tell.

Other things: expect the likes of screenshots from games I'm playing, links to useful/interesting information, lots of pictures and my general opinionated posts just to add to the fun.
